Which one fits which situation

Quick answer

Both are two-input USB audio interfaces with two microphone preamps, phantom power and 24-bit/192 kHz conversion. Behringer states +48 Volt phantom power, and Focusrite lists phantom power on its spec sheet.

The differences in our sources come from the Focusrite spec sheet. Focusrite lists Auto Gain, Clip Safe, Air Mode and Loopback, and it publishes gain range and dynamic range figures for its microphone inputs. Behringer's page in our sources lists none of these.

So the question to answer first is whether you want automatic help with levels and a way to record computer audio, or whether manual setup is fine for you.

Choose Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD if

  • You want two combination XLR/TRS inputs that Behringer says take microphones, instruments or line level sources.
  • You want a Direct Monitor switch: Behringer says the phones output has its own level control and absolutely no audio delay.
  • You play live with backing tracks, which Behringer names as one of its uses at a gig.

Choose Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen if

  • You want help setting levels: Focusrite lists Auto Gain and Clip Safe.
  • You need computer audio inside your recording, for a stream or a call: Focusrite lists Loopback.
  • You want published measurements: Focusrite states a 69 dB gain range and a 116 dB A-weighted dynamic range for its microphone inputs.
  • You want a USB Type-C connection with bus power, and a USB-C to USB-A cable in the box.
  • You want a stated three-year warranty.

By use case

Vocals

Both supply phantom power for condenser microphones. Behringer states +48 Volt phantom power for condenser microphones, and Focusrite lists phantom power.

Focusrite publishes a 69 dB gain range and an EIN of -127 dBu (A-weighted) for its microphone inputs. Behringer's page in our sources gives no gain range figure.

Focusrite also lists Air Mode on its spec sheet.

Guitar

Behringer says its two combination XLR/TRS inputs accept microphones, instruments or line level sources.

Focusrite lists two instrument inputs and two line inputs.

Whichever you pick, set the input your guitar uses to instrument level before you record.

What the specs do not tell you

A spec sheet cannot tell you how an interface fits on your desk, how its controls feel, or how its drivers behave on your own computer.

Our sources for the UMC202HD do not state its dynamic range, gain range, power source, dimensions or weight.

Focusrite states a height of 47.5 mm, a width of 180 mm, a depth of 117 mm and a weight of 0.595 kg.

Before you buy either one, list the microphones and instruments you will plug in at the same time, and count the inputs you need.
